Fishlike's Testimonials

Samuel Lim

Like many before me, many multisports athletes, seasoned or aspiring ones came to know about Tang and the Fishlike Aquatic School through his community outreach. All of us had a simple goal which is to be able to swim freestyle efficiently. For some novice triathletes like myself, we probably spent most of our lives swimming in breaststroke and could hardly manage more than 50m of freestyle without being drained of energy or gasping for air. Like many before me who came to Tang, the success rate is very high simply because the physics behind TI that he teaches works at an exponential level compared to ordinary style of swimming. I have been training under Tang for just about 6 months already and I can now confidently handle 750m in full freestyle without hesitation. I am already 40 years old and have a very busy work schedule to set sufficient time to train so I would consider the TI improvement rate (at just once a week) is outstandingly high. For my younger peers in the program, I could see even more improvements; the work rate is much higher primarily because of the age factor and their determination to train outside class. This is an interesting point about TI style of swimming in that it focuses on techniques to achieve efficiency and effortless swimming rather than the run of the mill, swim till you burn out training programs. Older folks will never make it through such programs. And for the younger athletes or very fit people, the combination of efficient techniques and a good heart rate produces very, very good results; some even achieving solid Ironman swim times within a year of TI training. So you could say TI is for everybody, regardless of age or ability.

On a personal note about Tang, you could never find a more dedicated coach than him. He is extremely patient in his teachings, never forcing you to do more than what you can achieve at the moment. He conducts his class in very friendly, hands on manner and he is very sharp in spotting those slight variations in your techniques that requires improvements. What I like most is that he works with you to achieve your goals through a methodological and realistic approach. We just completed a training race recently and he had those seasoned triathletes race in measly 400m events (!!) just to drive home the point to swim the full course in TI style instead of letting old habits take over when in race mode. A humbling truth that if you can't TI in 400m, you won't TI in 3.8km.

I truly believe why Tang is good at what he is doing is because he is passionate about coaching and swimming, but most of all it is because he has a genuine interest in the success of his trainees.

I always believed that to do something well, I need to learn. Finding the right program or technique that works and makes sense is the first step. The next thing is to find someone who can deliver that program effectively and successfully. For me, this is TI + Tang. A big Thank You to Tang and his team for being great people, great coaches and most of all helping me discover the joy of swimming freestyle!
