ZENDURANCE CYCLING TECHNIQUE CLINICS

Enjoy the effortless power of great technique!

"Zendurance is the cycling equivalent of Total Immersion Swimming, a kinetically intelligent way to ride your bike."

Endorsed by Terry Laughlin, Founder & Head Coach of Total Immersion Swimming.

The One and Two-Day Zendurance Cycling Technique Clinics offer participants an intensive investigation of posture and alignment, biomechanics and riding position strategies.

Day One (of both clinics) takes place in a studio, using mirrors. Working with their own bikes mounted on stationary stands, this provides athletes with an unsurpassed opportunity for an intensive technique-centered investigation without the dangers and distractions of the open road. The intimate studio environment with mirrors offers instant feedback.

All genres of cycling technique (road, triathlon, etc.) are based on a dynamic and harmonious relationship between the cyclist and the cycle. Each relationship (and hence each individual's technique) is unique. Acquiring sound cycling technique is much more subtle than swim or run technique. This studio investigation leads each athlete towards a comprehensive, personalized cycling technique that empowers her/him with increased:

Speed

Efficiency and economy

Endurance

Balance and stability

Comfort and ease

Aerodynamics

The indoor clinic introduces an array of exercises and drills to facilitate this unique technique development process for each athlete. Typically, the studio day is divided into 2 sessions, each 2-2 1/2 hours long, with a break in between. (If time allows and demand exists, we can explore basic bike maintenance as well.)

This is not a high-intensity, high-output workout. Technique is best developed in a relaxed and calm environment. It is appropriate for athletes of all levels, especially beginning and intermediate riders. Due to the emphasis on harmony and dynamics between the cyclist and the cycle, athletes must provide their own bikes.

Day Two (of the two-day clinic) begins back in the studio with a 1-1 1/2 hour "refresher". Next the clinic moves outside to apply the new technique tools to "real world" riding for 1 1/2-2 hours. Focuses include handling skills (aero and road positions), climbing, terrain and wind-based riding positions, bottle hand-offs, gear selection and cadence, head positioning for aerodynamics and vision, etc. Ideally, this outdoor session takes place in close proximity to the studio, using a parking lot, a quiet stretch of flat road and a quiet hill. The second day concludes back in the studio with a focus on proprioceptive skills.

All participants receive the 25-page Zendurance Cycling Technique Clinic Take-Home Guide, so they can continue to develop and refine their effortless power on the bike.

Clinic prerequisites: An open mind, curiosity and a passion for athletic excellence. As mentioned above, you must bring your bike. (Stationary stands may be available at some clinics.) A dynamic and harmonious relationship begins with a bike that fits you. Shane recommends that you consult a competent bike fit specialist if you are earnest in your pursuit of cycling excellence.

At this time, all clinics are lead by Shane Eversfield, founder and head coach of Zendurance Cycling. Shane is a Serotta Bike Fit Specialist, was certified as a USAT Level I Coach in 2004 and as a Total Immersion Swim Coach in 2008. He has also written several articles and columns for USA Triathlon Life, Triathlete Magazine, Inside Triathlon and Hammer Nutrition's Endurance News. Check his bio for a complete profile. You may wish to read "Positioning On the Bike" and "Cycling Strength and Speed".

Like many before me, many multisports athletes, seasoned or aspiring ones came to know about Tang and the Fishlike Aquatic School through his community outreach. All of us had a simple goal which is to be able to swim freestyle efficiently. For some novice triathletes like myself, we probably spent most of our lives swimming in breaststroke and could hardly manage more than 50m of freestyle without being drained of energy or gasping for air. Like many before me who came to Tang, the success rate is very high simply because the physics behind TI that he teaches works at an exponential level compared to ordinary style of swimming. I have been training under Tang for just about 6 months already and I can now confidently handle 750m in full freestyle without hesitation. I am already 40 years old and have a very busy work schedule to set sufficient time to train so I would consider the TI improvement rate (at just once a week) is outstandingly high. For my younger peers in the program, I could see even more improvements; the work rate is much higher primarily because of the age factor and their determination to train outside class. This is an interesting point about TI style of swimming in that it focuses on techniques to achieve efficiency and effortless swimming rather than the run of the mill, swim till you burn out training programs. Older folks will never make it through such programs. And for the younger athletes or very fit people, the combination of efficient techniques and a good heart rate produces very, very good results; some even achieving solid Ironman swim times within a year of TI training. So you could say TI is for everybody, regardless of age or ability.

On a personal note about Tang, you could never find a more dedicated coach than him. He is extremely patient in his teachings, never forcing you to do more than what you can achieve at the moment. He conducts his class in very friendly, hands on manner and he is very sharp in spotting those slight variations in your techniques that requires improvements. What I like most is that he works with you to achieve your goals through a methodological and realistic approach. We just completed a training race recently and he had those seasoned triathletes race in measly 400m events (!!) just to drive home the point to swim the full course in TI style instead of letting old habits take over when in race mode. A humbling truth that if you can't TI in 400m, you won't TI in 3.8km.

I truly believe why Tang is good at what he is doing is because he is passionate about coaching and swimming, but most of all it is because he has a genuine interest in the success of his trainees.

I always believed that to do something well, I need to learn. Finding the right program or technique that works and makes sense is the first step. The next thing is to find someone who can deliver that program effectively and successfully. For me, this is TI + Tang. A big Thank You to Tang and his team for being great people, great coaches and most of all helping me discover the joy of swimming freestyle!

Dear Tang and all assistant instructors,

It's been a most fruitful (albeit cold!!!) 8 sessions with you learning the TI way of swimming freestyle. I had always thought that pulling and kicking harder is the key to swimming longer and faster, and the TI method had given me new insights into how one can do the freestyle more efficiently without constantly kicking and pulling harder! Although still far from being able to execute the stroke correctly, the sessions had laid the foundation for me to understand and I believe, to improve by practicing this method of swimming.

And your easy and patient guidance is most appreciated. Having the number of instructors to constantly correct the posture and inculcate the right techniques of each drill and slowly building the freestyle stroke is effective. I look forward to the next module to continue practicing the TI way of swimming with you and your team!

Best Regards,

Thank You Tang and your TI Team,

I first learned to "Swim" at 17 years old. Swimming for me has always been one of "kick harder and pull harder" method. Today at 50 years old, your TI methods have opened my eyes to "Efficient and Graceful Swimming the correct way without having to kick harder and pull harder. TI methods open the horizons to continuous swimming without getting so exhausted and surprisingly improves speed. I could hardly swim freestyle through the 50 m length pool without getting breathless at the end. Now after having gone through TI Module One I can swim the 50 m effortlessly even though I have not mastered the methods perfectly. I cannot wait till I put in the practice to reap the rewards of your coaching.

Many coaches these days lack the patience and passion for the sport. You on the other hand are an asset not only to the TI method of swimming but most of all to the students who are fortunate to learn from you.

Thank You again and I wish you all the success towards achieving your goal of an indoor training (warm) pool by 2009.

I had been looking for a certified Total Immersion instructor when I came upon Tang's name on their official website. I decided to include 8 hours of private instruction during a holiday trip to Singapore.

I found Tang to be an experienced and patient instructor who understands the needs of adult improvement minded swimmers.

Tang has a good eye for spotting problems. On day one for example he immediately spotted my breathing problems and took me through a set of drills designed to reduce the problem.

Tang stayed in the water with me through our every session. He first demonstrated each new drill, explained it and then I went through it. Tang usually signaled correct body position by tapping or sometimes moving my head or arms. He also explained what I needed to change. I especially appreciated learning a drill through both visual and kinesthetic channels. Tang patiently "hung in there" with me until I was ready to go on to another new drill.

Daily video taping and replay helped me to see improvement as well as what needed to improve.

The cool water temperature in the pool was really the only downside to our lessons.

My stroke has improved as a result of the lessons. Do I have a great stroke? No, not by a long shot but I have a clear sense of the way towards improvement.

Overall, I was very pleased with the lessons and impressed by Tang's hard work and dedication.

Module 3: Becoming Balanced And Slippery

Module Details

Happy Laps is the first TI workshop that addresses the real basics for non-swimmers.

How do I swim without fear of sinking?

How do I breathe in water?

How do I move with such efficiency that I will be able to swim graceful, nearly effortless laps for health, fitness or pleasure with absolute comfort and confidence?

Happy Laps, turning anyone into a swimmer

Happy Laps is a simplified approach to learn the skills of moving through water easily, comfortably, and so pleasurably that your practice time becomes the healthiest, most rewarding, part of your day.

Refined and enhanced by our FAS coaches. Happy Laps will nurture in you, step by step, a completely fresh way to move through the water. Some thing you would never experience if you once fear the waters.

Although available in self-help DVDs, our FAS coaches strongly believe in water safety and trained supervision. With an experience coach beside you, your steep learning cure would be made much gentler. Each session, designed to be thoughtfully-choreographed learning games and self-awareness exercises, eventually becomes an enjoyment of self-discovery.

Top

Module 1: At Home In The Water

Objectives: To develop a comfortable, trusting relationship with water; understand its properties, overcome common fears, and build confidence.

Divided into 8 exercises, you will learn to trust the water do what it does naturally - supporting your weight. Eventually, you would be able to calmly experience how your body behaves in a fluid. It is all in the mind!

Here, you'll also learn how to breathe comfortably in the water and how it feels to glide short distances effortlessly.

Top

Module 2: Weightless In The Water

Objective: To position your body and distribute your weight to get the water to support you completely and effortlessly.

Designed into manageable 10 exercises, you will learn how to float in the first 4 exercises. If you're an adult and haven't yet learned to swim comfortably, it's not likely you can persuade your rational mind after all these years that you can get the water to support you. Here you simply do floating exercises over and over, with help and advice from your coach, until you know "in your bones" that the water will support you every time.

Top

Module 3: Becoming Balanced And Slippery

Objective: Discovering a swimming style that will be easy to learn so you can quickly begin gaining all the benefits and pleasures of graceful, relaxed laps.

Having experienced the freedom of weightless, effortless movement, this 8 exercises will allow you to learn the perfect foundation for learning advanced strokes. Coaches would nurture the habits of flow, efficiency and ease, rather than struggle in you.

Top

Fistgloves: How They Work

No suspense about this one: fistgloves are unquestionably the best way to learn how to anchor your hands "quickly". They turn any swimmer into a problem solver. When the problems the fistgloves create are solved, the ungloved hand will be much more solidly anchored than before.

One of my favorite coaching techniques is to present swimmer with a well-designed challenge, for example, figuring out how to make forward progress in the water without the use of an open hand. It never fails... Swimmers will experiment with different solutions and intuitively selects the one that works best (and it won't necessarily be the same solution for every swimmer). With furthur practice, they'll eventually "own" the improved techniques that is resulted, and they'll remember the lessons deeply because they discovered the answer all by themselves. In my experience, self-discovered techniques under experienced supervision are invariably more natural to the swimmer than one imposed by a coach or teacher.

The problem presented to the swimmer by the fistglove stroke trainer is ironically: how do you hold on to the water when you have nothing to hold on with? By squeezing the hands into a tight, latex-wrapped fist, a fistglove turns a broad, flat surface into a rubber nub. On the first few lengths, your hands would most likely slip helplessly through the water. But, gradually, you'll figure out how to gain a little control. This is done partly by using the forearm for purchase, partly by increasing the rotation of your body, and partly by simply learning to be more patient. By making the catch with exquisite patience and attention, you will eventually learn to get the water to resist the gloved hand "just a little bit". With practice you can learn to do remarkable things with the slight amount of resistance. So much so that by continuing to stroke patiently, the gloved-swimming sensation will gradually come to feel almost "normal". After a while, you may even wonder if you're wearing a glove!

Measure how much control you're gaining by counting strokes per length. If your experience is similar to mine and that of your TI swimming colleagues you'll find that when you first start wearing the fistgolve, your stroke count per 25 meters may be 3 to 4 strokes higher than without the gloves. But, after regular and attentive practice with the gloves, your gloved count would surprisingly drop to only 1, 2, or even 0 counts higher than your ungloved count. Here, you've learned to balance and rotate and find the best path through the water with our arms.

The real magic, of course, happens when you peel off the gloves. Suddenly, the previously ordinary-feeling hand seems "buge", as if you had a dinner-plate-sized paddle at the end of your arm. And with that broad, flat, bladelike implement to work with, holding on to the water - anchoring your hand - turns out to be a piece of cake.

Why are fistglove better than paddles for teaching the feel for water? Because paddles teach the opposite lesson from fistgloves. Swimmers figure that paddles will teach them how it feels to have "big hands". Once the paddles come off they'll only remember that particular sensation they're aiming for. While the paddles are on, you do of course feel more ease in anchoring and holding the water. But when the paddles come off? You'll feel like someone rowing with a popsicle stick. Your hands seem dumb and ineffectual. We have taken to calling fistgloves the "unpaddles", because after using fistgloves your hands seem smarter, not dumber!

I can't even finish a 25m freestyle swim; that was me before I knew Tang. Around July 2005 I caught the triathlon bug and competed in my first triathlon event when I can't swim freestyle at all. I can still vividly remember being one of the last few people left in the sea during my first triathlon race. So in December 2005 I decided that I should do some major training in my freestyle. I learnt about Fishlike Aquatic School and Tang's contact in a forum and decided to contact him to find out more about the Total Immersion (TI) program that he is conducting. After a few short e-mails exchange, I decided to give TI a try.

Tang is very patient with me as I have no swimming background at all. I took me quite a long time to finally grasp most of the drills before even dreaming of swimming freestyle normally. What's more important is that Tang doesn't just teach me TI, but he also explains to me the reasons and concepts behind each drill that we must do to achieve a smooth swimming stroke. Everything eventually made sense to me and I became more and more convince that TI will work. Only after about 4months of learning TI was I finally able to swim freestyle! But I still had a long way to go before I'm able to swim freestyle comfortably during a triathlon races.

Tang personally took up the challenge to make sure that I'll be able to swim well on my first Half-Ironman event in September 2006. With his encouragement and motivation, I improved tremendously! Within just 9 months, I'm able to swim freestyle in a Half-Ironman event! Something which I never even dream about 10 months before that.

After my Half-Ironman event, I gain confidence in my swim, and was fully convinced that all the drills and trainings that I had with Tang is the reason why my swim can improve so tremendously in such a short period of time! I'll be going for my first Ironman event in February 2007, and I have no doubt that the skills and fitness I've gained from Tang will be valuable for the swim section of my Ironman race!

Thank you Tang for your patience and also determination to make me a better swimmer! You are a great coach! I am looking forward to improve my swim even more under your training and guidance.

Yours sincerely, Andy

A Brief History of Total Immersion in FAS

As told by Tang Siew Kwan ...

The result of FAS today started out from the humble beginnings when I ventured into the teaching of swimming in Jan 1994 after graduating with my GCE 'O' Levels. In November 1994 when I got my SSA NCAP Technical Level 1 swimming certificate, I was only 16 years old, one of the youngest swimming instructors in Singapore. My main objective as a swim instructor then was to earn a living out of teaching in the field that I have spent so much time in. As an athlete at that time, I have been training in competitive water polo and competitive swimming. Although swimming and water sports were my passion and driving force, coaching had not surfaced as my forte. Like all instructors then, I started work as a lifeguard at Clementi Swimming Complex under the Singapore Sports Council.

I proceeded into my diploma studies while continuing to coach freelance for 3 years. Surprisingly, I found more satisfaction and passion to progress in coaching than in simply training myself to become a better swimmer and athlete. Eventually, I realized that it is not simply the higher income that drives me, but the challenge and contentment coaching provides. This is when it dawns upon me that I should try coaching more professionally. Following that, I started my own swim school known as Elite Tang Swimming Platoon (ETSP) in 1997. This was my first step towards professional coaching today.

The school began by coaching younger athletes and children as my priority. I believe in the traditional saying that a good athlete should always start young. I started by formulating my own methods of teaching in the Learn to Swim programs before bringing the better swimmers I taught into the arena of competitive swimming. With the knowledge and experiences from my previous instructors and coaches, I trained my athletes in the conventional concepts of shear strength and power. The training emphasizes on the using of kickboards, pull bouys and hand paddle. The idea I instill in my athletes then was like what all coaches stand by to: "No pain no gain". The harder you train, the better you should get.

It is only in 1998, after meeting my coaching mentor that I started to revolutionize many of my coaching concepts and methods. My mentor's name is Giam Teck Choon and he started off as my assistant / supervising coach. It is through him that I was gradually convinced that more effective methods other than conventional means of coaching are feasible. There should be more grace than shear strength and power in swimming. He later became my partner and ETSP was renamed Fishlike Aquatic School (FAS). During that time, I was also introduced to Total Immersion (TI) from the first TI book found in book stores. My attention was instantly captured as I was inspired to learn more. Sadly, the workshops were only offered in America at that time and the cost of flying there is way above my means at that time. Thus, I decided to buy the TI video for "Freestyle-the revolutionary way to swim better, faster and easier" and went about practicing on my own.

Through those times, Teck Choon and I researched and tried designing new means of more graceful yet effective swim methods in coaching. Much progress was made with tangible results in athletes under my guidance. Many were able to compete in National age-group level competitive swimming meets while some qualified in for the national team. Unfortunately, my partner had to leave the swim school for personal commitments and his pursue in his own IT business.

My innovations in more graceful yet effective swims continue with valuable results, but not with a break through. I was in a stand still in my ideas of innovative swimming then. In the year 2000, I met my current partner-John Lee Chung Yat. He shared with me his priceless experiences gained from teaching in YMCA-Taipei and his physical education degree from Taiwan. Base on his refreshing concepts, FAS rebounded and continued to reform from her initial stand still. By then, I have been practicing TI for 2 years and had realized that I am swimming more smoothly and gracefully than in my teens. I was among the average swimmers then and could never outshine. Now, even when I may not have been as physically fit as in the past, I surprisingly felt that I could travel much further per stroke than before. I achieved this sensation by becoming more relax while executing my stroke and body roll at a rhythmic time. It simply got better through mindful practice.

Meanwhile, I had been sharing the TI knowledge to my swimmers and experimenting my success during some trainings to observe the outcome. Surprisingly, my athletes picked up the concepts very quickly and were experiencing some of my success after 2 to 3 months of drilling. I eventually signed up for the 1st TI Freestyle Workshop in Nov 2003 in Singapore. In Jan 2004, I flew to Coral Springs Florida to undertake a six day TI Teachers Training and experienced two internships under the TI founder, Terry Laughlin. What truly motivated me during the internship was when one 83 years old participant managed to swim freestyle the fishlike way after the workshop. This assured me that age should not become an obstacle to swimming smoothly and gracefully.

After I returned, I went on to complete two internships with Ria Mackay and Ang Peng Siong. I even decided to return to America for further training for a full month and was attached to the Hawks team (an age group competitive team using TI techniques) while helping out in the running of the TI Four Stroke camp. I also witness the new TI swim Studio in New Paltz, New York.

These events truly inspired me to fine tune and re-formulate the weekend workshops to effectively to accommodate to Singapore needs. This is what today's TI Fishlike Freestyle Workshop (TI FFWS) Part A and B are about. After much observation after the workshops, I strongly felt that if the swimmers were left alone, progress became very limited without guidance from a certified TI coach. Eventually, I came out with a 3 module series known as TI Fishlike Triathlon Swimming Series (FTSS TM). Here, module one to three would guide a swimmer in a systematic approach toward the TI practices to increase mastery in distance and speed.

In year 2006, Fishlike Sports Academy Pte Ltd (FSA) was incorporated and it took over the whole operations of FAS. In 2007, FAS was made a subsidiary company owned by FSA. Now in 2007, FAS was tasked with the job of venturing Total Immersion (TI) Swimming in 5 countries (cities) in Asia: Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China.

Swim Smooth, Not Hard

Being an experienced school in the field of triathlon swim trainings, we have architected a unique style and approach towards this sport. Adapted from many proven techniques and ideas, we formulated a concise and effective coaching series where Fishlike Aquatic School differs from conventional training coaches to enforce skills and techniques. Here we concentrate on intense, focused training rather than swimming endless laps.

Fundamentally, we teach one to swim intelligently by having the water assisting an athlete rather than resisting him. This eventually turns all swims to be an efficient, elegant and beautiful display of power and speed.

Divided into 3 modules with progressive levels of training, this revolutionize freestyle swim series encompass the essence of Total Immersion (TI) and other swim technique all rolled up in one. Adapted for faster and more efficient learning, Fishlike Triathlon Swimming Series™ (FTSS) would prove to be more beneficial as a means to shorten your swim time while having you fresher out of the water.

As a swimming coach, Mr Tang has been placed the important charge of teaching us the method of Total Immersion. Ever mindful of his bearing, Mr Tang has maintained an impeccable turnout, serving as a positive example to others in upholding the outlook and image of swim coaches.
This is a personal testimonial for Mr Tang Siew Kwan. I have attended a one-to-one TI workshop conducted by Mr Tang in Aug 04 for 4 weeks and subsequently have been taking weekly swimming lessons from him till date. Over the several months, Mr Tang had shown professionalism, dedication and passion in his coaching work. Whenever I am in doubts, he would never hesitate to explain to me in detail and with patience. He has a friendly and cheerful personality which make learning more interesting and fun for me.

I would strongly recommend him for his worthy coaching.

Yours faithfully

Dear Tang,

Thank you so much for your support and assistance. I think you're a great coach with a great personality, well suited for your chosen profession. Tang appreciates that every person is an individual with unique needs and circumstances and understands individual goals. Yet, he makes everyone of any level feel special.

Your knowledge and past personal experience doesn't hurt either. As I've mentioned before, I feel I got more than my moneys worth. In addition to your program and your feedback, I really enjoyed the workouts. Unintimidating is the word that keeps popping into my mind and I think that is really important. You attract a group of really nice people to your club and that says a lot, I think. Thanks again, I had an AWESOME experience in Total Immersion!

Dear Tang,

Come June 2005, it will mark my one year of swimming under you and the TI way and I vividly remember I was a "splasher" that lasted ONLY one lap when we first met.

When I came to you and told you I have 2 months prior to a triathlon race and needed freestyle coaching, you took on the challenge while other coaches told me the impossible and to stay with breaststroke. As an aspiring endurance athlete, I have always maintained that "everything-is-possible" attitude. I was encouraged by your determination to make me a better swimmer. Your strong belief in the TI swimming techniques coupled with your commitment and dedication provided me the assurance despite of my long list of worries. Throughout the TI workshop, your effective coaching method instilled swim confidence and water comfort. Not once do I recall any disappointment nor signals of "impossibilities" from you. Nothing supersedes the right mental attitude and this has to come from both the coach and student.

Swimming is an art, swimming effortlessly, swimming with grace were all alien to me when I started TI. Over a span of 5 months since I started swimming with you, I have completed 2 sprint distance and 1 Olympic distance triathlons. Though I wouldn't say the initial swims were fun, I was able to apply the techniques and complete the swim leg, and have enough energy to bike and run. With the follow-up swim sessions, I started swimming laps without feeling tired. Also, I have been told and can feel the grace in my strokes which I am really proud of. It is an art that I learn to appreciate.

TI WORKS! And so my life as a first year triathlete has been good.

Tang, my goal this year is to complete the Desaru Half Ironman and hopefully prepare me for an Ironman next year. With your guidance, I am sure I will overcome the fear of distance swimming. Thank you.
