OSIM Singapore International Triathlon 2009 Report

The race is basically in waves, starting with the Kids (Boys) 7 to 9 years which started on time at 0800 hrs, then after 10 minutes followed by Kids (Girls) 7 to 9 years.

On the Girls Category, Natalie Devan had a great overall performance finishing 5th place from a pack of 54 competitors.

Under this category, both Boys and Girls will swim 100 meters, bike for 5 KM and run for 1 KM. One official mentioned that the waves were pretty strong but one of our triathletes said the current was much stronger.

The wave for Kids (Boys) 10 to 12 years started at 0820 hrs, followed by Girls 10 to 12 years at 0830 hrs, both Boys and Girls will swim 200 meters, bike for 10 KM and run for 2 KM

We saw an exciting sprint to the finish line on the run leg for Jonathan Leong. He was running so fast and chasing very closely a runner in front of him. But at the last 50 meters on the finish line, when he’s about to overtake, his left shoe went off but he kept on to the finish line. He reached 13 seconds behind the runner without a left shoe on. Everyone on the stand cheered because of his guts and determination. One of the emcees picked up his left shoe and gave it to him on the finish line.

On the Girls Category again, we have Bek Kiah Hui, Joelyn Goh and Chua Xing Ling finishing 6th, 7th and 8th respectively.

Congratulations girls!

Bintan Triathlon 2009 Report

A total of 10 students from Fishlike Sports Academy joined the annual Bintan Triathlon held last 24 May 2009 at Nirwana Gardens, Bintan Island, Indonesia.

Last year, Bek Kiah Hui was at the Nirwana Gardens to join the Bintan Triathlon 2008. But hours before the start of the race, she fell from her bicycle during practice and so she was not able to compete in the race. That experience marked a lot of determination and focus on her. Instead of getting frustrated, she overwhelmingly conquered it with discipline, guts and strength of mind and making her finish this year s race on the 2nd spot for female 12-13 years old Youth Distance Triathlon Category.

Among the 10 triathletes, only 2 were last year s veterans, Bek Kiah Jun and Chua Xing Ling. The new faces in Bintan Triathlon 2009 are Iz Ho Jian Song, Bryce Chong Sheng Cher, Gene Tan Ee Hong, Maxz Ho Jian Chen, Jonathan Leong Zhen Cong, Ancel Chong Fu Shea, Natalie Devan and Bek Kiah Hui.

In 10-11 Kids Distance Triathlon Category, Bryce Chong, first time to compete in the Bintan Triathlon, he clocked in fastest in swimming at 00:02:42 but he took more time in the 1st transition at 01:02. Overall he clocked in 00:28:23 for 150M swim, 6KM bike and 1.5KM run. He is just 1 second behind the Bronze medalist.

Another first timer in the Bintan Triathlon is Natalie Devan, though overall she finished 5th in the 8-9 Kids Distance Triathlon Category, she performed an outstanding feat in the run leg, clocking in 1st in the 1.5KM run at 00:10:20. Next year, these guys will be the force to reckon with.

Fishlike Tri-Kids Mastery Series is a dynamic training program whose primary mission is to promote a healthy triathlete lifestyle for children. The Fishlike Sports Academy (FSA) is dedicated to providing kids with the opportunity to exercise and maintain healthy life. As today's children are less fit and more prone to childhood obesity than ever, the Fishlike Tri-Kids Mastery Series is an opportunity for children to start developing their life with a healthy, fun outdoor activity.

Triathlon is a fantastic endeavour for children because it promotes involvement in three "lifestyle" sports. No matter what the age, children who develop some skills in swimming, biking and running will be able to pursue any sport they would like when they are older.

Sports should be the most enjoyable and educational activity our children get to do. It should provide them with a positive feeling about themselves. It should teach them that they can improve themselves in all endeavours of life by working hard and persevering. It should teach them about the good benefits of working as part of a team or training group. It should show them how much they gain in life by striving to achieve their goals. The Fishlike Tri-Kids Mastery Series will help them achieve all that!

Our teachings are to nurture and train water-safety skills and habits, while teaching children to swim intelligently and gracefully.

This 10 modules course is designed for children age 4 years and above to be taught in the skills of water-safety and the art of swimming independently. Classes are taught in groups of no more than 7 with a permanent swim teacher attached to the same class through out the module. From modules 4 and above, classes would be extended from 1.0 hr to 1.5 hr, inclusive of weekly run programs.

Learning to swim is not just about staying afloat and moving aimlessly forward in the water. FSA believes in a dynamic program that nurtures an interest in the child for this sport of swimming while keeping fit, meeting new friends. And most importantly, learn of the many water-safety skills for the ability to swim independently with grace and efficiency. Our program aims to stretch a child in his or her ability, while giving attention to each unique child that learns differently. Our years of records have shown the many successes that we have achieved with the children; and still doing today.

Some 30 plus kids from Fishlike Sports Academy participated in the Milo MOE Tryathlon last 7 March 2009 held at Tanjong Beach, Sentosa. Over 2,200 kids joined the event that organisers were overwhelmed by the turnout of enthusiastic participants coming from different local and international schools and sports organisations.

The Education Ministry (MOE) is trying to get more students interested in triathlon that is why it has teamed up with beverage company Milo to organise the Milo MOE Youth TRYathlon. This inaugural event is aimed at students aged 8 to 18 from local and international schools.

The event was organised to emphasise enjoying the sport without the pressures of having to win. “This is what Singaporean kids need as a deviation from the daily grind they are used to with rankings and results,” said Ying Ren, SEA Games Triathlon gold medalist.

The Milo MOE Tryathlon, which consists of swim, bike and run legs, has adopted a non-competition format. Fun and participation will be the objective that matter in the race, said organisers Racer's Toolbox. Neither times nor placings will be recorded and all finishers will get a trophy.

The event has a junior (8-11 years: 100M swim, 4KM bike and 1KM run), an intermediate (12-15 years: 200M swim, 8KM bike and 2KM run) and a senior (16-18 years: 300M, 12KM bike and 3KM run) category.

For those not confident yet of taking on all three disciplines of the triathlon, there is the option of the relay where the composition of the team will not be restricted by age.

Every participant received an official event sports singlet and goodie bag, as well as a finisher’s trophy after crossing the finish line.

Although, the organisers messed up with controlling the parents and spectators and putting order within the transition areas, the event was still relatively successful.

Some parents present at Sentosa were impressed how organised and disciplined the Fishlike Sports Academy students were, they have their baskets complete with their biking essentials placed next to their bikes on the grounds at transition area and they were able to put those things within seconds after their swim leg. The regimen of practice has paid off.

After the race is over, we have not received any report of injuries and lost items within our students who participated in the inaugural Milo MOE Tryathlon 2009.

1ST ANNUAL FISHLIKE NIGHT CYCLING 2008

December 10, 2008 marked another milestone in the dynamic Fishlike Sports Academy. It launched the 1st Annual Fishlike Night Cycling Program.

A total of 32 kids (ages 7 to 12) joined the event that started from 7:30 in the evening until past 12 midnight. The 60 kilometer course started from Pasir Ris Park to Changi Village to NSRCC to East Coast Park, Hawker Centre to Big Splash playground to Fort Road and back to Pasir Ris Park via the same route. Each of the connecting points mentioned above where strategically picked for resting and also served as water stations.

The kids were grouped into 4 teams and they biked in single file formation following their team leader and an assistant team leader riding last to ensure that every rider is safe and within their ranks. Team A with 9 young riders started at Pasir Ris Park at 7:30 PM and arrived at Changi Village at 8:06 PM. Teams B, C and D assembled at Changi Village. They started the course at 8:45 PM. Team B and C arrived at NSRCC at 9:35 PM then went straight ahead to East Coast Park after 15 minutes of rest. Team D with a pack of young and mostly new riders arrived at NSRCC at 10:10 PM then after 15 minutes rest headed back to Changi Village. Team B and C arrived at East Coast Park at 10:25 PM then after 20 minutes rest cycled back to Changi Village to end the night course. Only Team A finished the 60 kilometer course still in high spirits.

Team A starting at Pasir Ris Park. 3rd from right is Tang Siew Kwan, Fishlike Sports Academy, Managing Director, as their team leader and Angela, 1st on the right, as assistant team leader.

The event was organized by Tang Siew Kwan, Managing Director of Fishlike Sports Academy, said that the event is not intended as a race but more of building team effort, letting the kids have fun and provide them a program that will keep them healthy, alert and smart. He also said that he plans to keep this an annual event and targets to have at least 100 or more participants next year.

The night cycling program ended at Costa Sands Resort with refreshments, barbeque, fruits and awarding of prizes for the best team. And the organizers awarded it to the mostly young and new riders, Team D, who made an impressive effort and took courage to participate in the night course. Aside from Tang, 3 other team leaders, 4 assistant team leaders, 2 support teams, 4 parents who also biked along their kids volunteered and contributed success to the event. And also Yuhui and friends who prepared the barbeque and refreshments at the chalet. See you guys next year for the 2nd Annual Night Cycling Program. We’ll keep you posted!

Like many before me, many multisports athletes, seasoned or aspiring ones came to know about Tang and the Fishlike Aquatic School through his community outreach. All of us had a simple goal which is to be able to swim freestyle efficiently. For some novice triathletes like myself, we probably spent most of our lives swimming in breaststroke and could hardly manage more than 50m of freestyle without being drained of energy or gasping for air. Like many before me who came to Tang, the success rate is very high simply because the physics behind TI that he teaches works at an exponential level compared to ordinary style of swimming. I have been training under Tang for just about 6 months already and I can now confidently handle 750m in full freestyle without hesitation. I am already 40 years old and have a very busy work schedule to set sufficient time to train so I would consider the TI improvement rate (at just once a week) is outstandingly high. For my younger peers in the program, I could see even more improvements; the work rate is much higher primarily because of the age factor and their determination to train outside class. This is an interesting point about TI style of swimming in that it focuses on techniques to achieve efficiency and effortless swimming rather than the run of the mill, swim till you burn out training programs. Older folks will never make it through such programs. And for the younger athletes or very fit people, the combination of efficient techniques and a good heart rate produces very, very good results; some even achieving solid Ironman swim times within a year of TI training. So you could say TI is for everybody, regardless of age or ability.

On a personal note about Tang, you could never find a more dedicated coach than him. He is extremely patient in his teachings, never forcing you to do more than what you can achieve at the moment. He conducts his class in very friendly, hands on manner and he is very sharp in spotting those slight variations in your techniques that requires improvements. What I like most is that he works with you to achieve your goals through a methodological and realistic approach. We just completed a training race recently and he had those seasoned triathletes race in measly 400m events (!!) just to drive home the point to swim the full course in TI style instead of letting old habits take over when in race mode. A humbling truth that if you can't TI in 400m, you won't TI in 3.8km.

I truly believe why Tang is good at what he is doing is because he is passionate about coaching and swimming, but most of all it is because he has a genuine interest in the success of his trainees.

I always believed that to do something well, I need to learn. Finding the right program or technique that works and makes sense is the first step. The next thing is to find someone who can deliver that program effectively and successfully. For me, this is TI + Tang. A big Thank You to Tang and his team for being great people, great coaches and most of all helping me discover the joy of swimming freestyle!

Dear Tang and all assistant instructors,

It's been a most fruitful (albeit cold!!!) 8 sessions with you learning the TI way of swimming freestyle. I had always thought that pulling and kicking harder is the key to swimming longer and faster, and the TI method had given me new insights into how one can do the freestyle more efficiently without constantly kicking and pulling harder! Although still far from being able to execute the stroke correctly, the sessions had laid the foundation for me to understand and I believe, to improve by practicing this method of swimming.

And your easy and patient guidance is most appreciated. Having the number of instructors to constantly correct the posture and inculcate the right techniques of each drill and slowly building the freestyle stroke is effective. I look forward to the next module to continue practicing the TI way of swimming with you and your team!

Thank You Tang and your TI Team,

I first learned to "Swim" at 17 years old. Swimming for me has always been one of "kick harder and pull harder" method. Today at 50 years old, your TI methods have opened my eyes to "Efficient and Graceful Swimming the correct way without having to kick harder and pull harder. TI methods open the horizons to continuous swimming without getting so exhausted and surprisingly improves speed. I could hardly swim freestyle through the 50 m length pool without getting breathless at the end. Now after having gone through TI Module One I can swim the 50 m effortlessly even though I have not mastered the methods perfectly. I cannot wait till I put in the practice to reap the rewards of your coaching.

Many coaches these days lack the patience and passion for the sport. You on the other hand are an asset not only to the TI method of swimming but most of all to the students who are fortunate to learn from you.

Thank You again and I wish you all the success towards achieving your goal of an indoor training (warm) pool by 2009.

I had been looking for a certified Total Immersion instructor when I came upon Tang's name on their official website. I decided to include 8 hours of private instruction during a holiday trip to Singapore.

I found Tang to be an experienced and patient instructor who understands the needs of adult improvement minded swimmers.

Tang has a good eye for spotting problems. On day one for example he immediately spotted my breathing problems and took me through a set of drills designed to reduce the problem.

Tang stayed in the water with me through our every session. He first demonstrated each new drill, explained it and then I went through it. Tang usually signaled correct body position by tapping or sometimes moving my head or arms. He also explained what I needed to change. I especially appreciated learning a drill through both visual and kinesthetic channels. Tang patiently "hung in there" with me until I was ready to go on to another new drill.

Daily video taping and replay helped me to see improvement as well as what needed to improve.

The cool water temperature in the pool was really the only downside to our lessons.

My stroke has improved as a result of the lessons. Do I have a great stroke? No, not by a long shot but I have a clear sense of the way towards improvement.

Overall, I was very pleased with the lessons and impressed by Tang's hard work and dedication.

I can't even finish a 25m freestyle swim; that was me before I knew Tang. Around July 2005 I caught the triathlon bug and competed in my first triathlon event when I can't swim freestyle at all. I can still vividly remember being one of the last few people left in the sea during my first triathlon race. So in December 2005 I decided that I should do some major training in my freestyle. I learnt about Fishlike Aquatic School and Tang's contact in a forum and decided to contact him to find out more about the Total Immersion (TI) program that he is conducting. After a few short e-mails exchange, I decided to give TI a try.

Tang is very patient with me as I have no swimming background at all. I took me quite a long time to finally grasp most of the drills before even dreaming of swimming freestyle normally. What's more important is that Tang doesn't just teach me TI, but he also explains to me the reasons and concepts behind each drill that we must do to achieve a smooth swimming stroke. Everything eventually made sense to me and I became more and more convince that TI will work. Only after about 4months of learning TI was I finally able to swim freestyle! But I still had a long way to go before I'm able to swim freestyle comfortably during a triathlon races.

Tang personally took up the challenge to make sure that I'll be able to swim well on my first Half-Ironman event in September 2006. With his encouragement and motivation, I improved tremendously! Within just 9 months, I'm able to swim freestyle in a Half-Ironman event! Something which I never even dream about 10 months before that.

After my Half-Ironman event, I gain confidence in my swim, and was fully convinced that all the drills and trainings that I had with Tang is the reason why my swim can improve so tremendously in such a short period of time! I'll be going for my first Ironman event in February 2007, and I have no doubt that the skills and fitness I've gained from Tang will be valuable for the swim section of my Ironman race!

Thank you Tang for your patience and also determination to make me a better swimmer! You are a great coach! I am looking forward to improve my swim even more under your training and guidance.

Yours sincerely, Andy

Dear Tang,

Thank you so much for your support and assistance. I think you're a great coach with a great personality, well suited for your chosen profession. Tang appreciates that every person is an individual with unique needs and circumstances and understands individual goals. Yet, he makes everyone of any level feel special.

Your knowledge and past personal experience doesn't hurt either. As I've mentioned before, I feel I got more than my moneys worth. In addition to your program and your feedback, I really enjoyed the workouts. Unintimidating is the word that keeps popping into my mind and I think that is really important. You attract a group of really nice people to your club and that says a lot, I think. Thanks again, I had an AWESOME experience in Total Immersion!

Dear Tang,

Come June 2005, it will mark my one year of swimming under you and the TI way and I vividly remember I was a "splasher" that lasted ONLY one lap when we first met.

When I came to you and told you I have 2 months prior to a triathlon race and needed freestyle coaching, you took on the challenge while other coaches told me the impossible and to stay with breaststroke. As an aspiring endurance athlete, I have always maintained that "everything-is-possible" attitude. I was encouraged by your determination to make me a better swimmer. Your strong belief in the TI swimming techniques coupled with your commitment and dedication provided me the assurance despite of my long list of worries. Throughout the TI workshop, your effective coaching method instilled swim confidence and water comfort. Not once do I recall any disappointment nor signals of "impossibilities" from you. Nothing supersedes the right mental attitude and this has to come from both the coach and student.

Swimming is an art, swimming effortlessly, swimming with grace were all alien to me when I started TI. Over a span of 5 months since I started swimming with you, I have completed 2 sprint distance and 1 Olympic distance triathlons. Though I wouldn't say the initial swims were fun, I was able to apply the techniques and complete the swim leg, and have enough energy to bike and run. With the follow-up swim sessions, I started swimming laps without feeling tired. Also, I have been told and can feel the grace in my strokes which I am really proud of. It is an art that I learn to appreciate.

TI WORKS! And so my life as a first year triathlete has been good.

Tang, my goal this year is to complete the Desaru Half Ironman and hopefully prepare me for an Ironman next year. With your guidance, I am sure I will overcome the fear of distance swimming. Thank you.
